You are correct in that the plugin can be executed as a standalone program to get the result. The advantage with Nagios is that many companies around the world uses the Nagmon suite of software to monitor a lot of different equipment. Mostly servers and switches in network infrastructure.
With this plugin we add the ability for this software suite to monitor values from the IoT Open platform as well. If you have some servers in a server room beeing monitored you could add IoT sensors connected to the platform for ambiance monitoring of temperature and humidity.
This is taken from our test environment from the Nagios web frontend. An example of a weather report from Gothenburg.
Nagios software can send alerts and log based on thresholds for data values. In the picture above you can see that the value is OK, this will change to yellow and "WARNING" if above a threshold and even red and "CRITICAL" if above another one. I get notified by email every time the state changes.
