That's a very wide question so the answer will be quite general. Generally we don't see any problems with APIs in relation to IoT, but that wouldn't make a great theses would it?
So there are some things I can find problematic and that is that there are several standards for integrating systems related to, or involving, IoT. But as these tries to be general and fit all actors they quite fast tends to become very complex. And with complexity comes performance issues and more complex and expensive integrations when every one needs to implement an api or standard that is intended for something bigger or even something else. And still there is no one standard to rule them all but different industries have different standards so no problem is really solved.
Our standpoint is that it is more effective if every system has a simple, fit for purpose, well documented and open API. The downside is that there is no "plug and play" between systems without a gateway in between but if every API meets those simple requirements there will be no big issue. The total cost will be lower and all systems will perform better.
